I played for hours, just reacting to events in the world and revelling in the joy of discovering the in-game language.Starting with a single word, and trying to extrapolate the meaning of glyphs etched into artifacts you find on the many moons, ruins, and from traders is the most bizarrely excellent and exciting system I've played with in ages! I'm honestly sad that there are no other games quite like it.The conversations flow naturally (though only when you realise that Aliya, the main character, has preexisting character flaws that you discover over time - or "is a bit of a jerk"), and there are so many options to discover that multiple playthroughs work well. The visual style is interesting; though it was controversial when initially announced, you soon get used to it and just enjoy the world.I completed the game on PS4, and rebought on Steam to play again!. As someone who occupies most of their time with studying ancient history, loves Ancient Egypt, and is also a language enthusiast who studied linguistics as well, this game was simply perfect for me. If you are even remotely interested in linguistics, history and archaeology, as well as liking adventure\/exploration games with a heavy focus on the narrative and making choices, then this will be a great experience for you. I am calling it an experience more than a game, because for me it had less to do with playing any game mechanics and more with getting immersed in the world, the characters and its lore.Basically Heaven's Vault invites you to grab a cup of coffee, put on your archaeology hat and then become part of a beautifully crafted setting that heavily draws from the Ancient cultures of our Earth, mostly the natives\/indigenous and of course Egyptian\/African ancient history and culture.Highly recommended for those people like me who are a bit tired of all the violent, drama heavy\/focused entertainment out there and want to engage with more profound and beautiful ideas. Thank you, dev team, for creating this work of art. Please more of this :). As interesting as the worldbuilding is, this is the first game I've ever played where I've been impatient for cutscenes to end. It's not that the cutscenes are boring, but rather that the central translating mechanic is SO MUCH FUN. I'm obsessed, which makes it very easy to roleplay as Aliya, even when she's being a jerk - like her, I can't wait to get back into some ruins and get my hands on some more Ancient Language!I haven't quite gotten a handle on how the roleplaying works yet - if there's a way to tell which of the two reply options it gives you is going to be the rude one and which the nice, I haven't found it. And as much as I love the translations, the other central mechanic, of sailing on the astral rivers, isn't my favorite, so I'm excited to try the update that lets you fast travel to more locations! Searching for undiscovered sites is going to stay tedious, but that's mostly because I'm overeager for more ruins - I could wait until I find more clues to narrow the search area.Overall, the world is interesting and the main character has a lot of personality, which I respect even if I wish I could make her be a little nicer to our pet robot. Most importantly, I LOVE the translation mechanic, and I suspect that those of you who are language nerds and perfectionists will love it too.. Playtime: About 10 to 15 hoursHeaven's Vault is one of the most captivating games I've ever played.Tremendous world building, great characters, and an engrossing narrative and overarching mystery. This is easily one of my favorite games of 2019. I just finished it and i'm already excited to play it again. If you're a fan of Inkle, adventure games, or unique sci-fi settings do not let this game pass you by!. It's very good.Decoding the ancient language is a delight. The characters are well written and engaging, and I get the impression that there's more variety in them than I saw in a single playthrough. It's also a very odd game. It's not exactly that the game breaks "the rules". It's more like the game doesn't recognise that there ARE rules. In a way, it feels like it belongs to an earlier age, when new genres were being forged. I don't think this is the product of accident or naivete. It reminds me of experimental games like Trinity (1986) and Blue Ice (1996), though it's a great deal more accessible than either. It's not completely perfect.I started playing before the first patch came out, and there were plenty of quirks and janks and gremlins along the way. I gladly forgave most of them, though. The design may be bold, occasionally disconcerting and elliptical... but the heart of the game is just good, straightforward storytelling. And it does that really well.. As interesting as the worldbuilding is, this is the first game I've ever played where I've been impatient for cutscenes to end. It's not that the cutscenes are boring, but rather that the central translating mechanic is SO MUCH FUN. Kotaku features talk on Heaven's Vault dialogue design: At Adventure X in November, our writer did a talk about making super-engaging interactive dialogue, and dove into depth about some of the tricks we're using to make Heaven's Vault great. That talk is now up on YouTube, and Kotaku have written it up.Enjoy!. The Space Birthday Update: Player Story Trading Cards: This post is about a feature of the free Space Birthday Update, out now! See this post for the details. One Space Year ago, we said we'd do something different with our trading cards. We didn't want them to be about the game's story, we wanted them to be about player stories. But we needed you to play a bit first, and show us what you got up to. And then it also took a really long time to make them. But now, on its first Space Birthday, we celebrate eight players and their moments of brilliance, stupidity and panic. They supplied us with clips of their antics, linked below, I wrote up their story as part of the game's lore, and John Roberts recreated their characters and situations to produce these lovely glamour shots of their moments of glory and/or shame. The cards themselves will go live when the update launches on the 27th.Thank you so much to all our players, for playing our strange game in smarter, wilder and funnier ways than we ever predicted.August 'Glitch Thief' Dust
